Just Some Camp Fun - Superhero Week

Campers Assemble!! It's Superhero Week!!

So, this week is turning into a very busy week in the Just Erika home.We have another week of daily activities planned but have additional online classes that we signed up for that are starting this week.  Before we get into the week's activities, here are the additional classes we have this week.

Extra Activities:
  1. Stan Lee, Marvel, and the History of Comic Books on Outschool.  I'm not exactly sure, but I think if you use a referral link like the one I put above, you will get a discount/credit after you sign up for your first class (and I think I get a credit too.)  I'm not an affiliate, just sharing so that hopefully we can all get discounts! :)
  2. We are also participating in the free Creativity Camp hosted by Arree Chung, a wonderful children's book author and illustrator.  We have received the class list for the week along with the supplies list and I am SUPER (no pun intended) excited for the boys to participate!
Art: We will be focusing on the art of comic books this week.  Each boy will create their own superhero, including name, costume and powers. We will use this great template from Inclusive Schools Network and then have them use the character they created to make their own comic books. We purchased these My Comic Book sets which gives them the pages and then we send them back to the company to be bound up into an actual comic book.  But, if you don't want to buy the kit, I found a ton of free templates on Pinterest including this one from Growing Book by Book.

Cookie Challenge: So....this one was at the request of our 7 year old who loves watching kids do food challenges on YouTube.  The whole family including grandparents will be participating in this one.  We have 14 different cookies for everyone to taste blindfolded and have to guess which cookie it is.  We will tie it in to Superhero Week by talking about the 5 senses and how superheroes usually have at least one sense that is heightened.  Before we begin, we will ask the boys to hypothesize if they think that taste can be heightened if they eliminate the sense of sight.

Science: This week we will focus primarily on the human body since most superheroes have at least one aspect of their body that is "super" and powerful.  We will talk to the boys about muscles, bones and organs, and how they all work.  We will create a pair of "lungs" (either this one or this one, both from Hello Wonderful) and do some worksheets from the Human Body Activity Book for Kids.  This book is designed more for K-3 but we also have the National Geographic Ultimate Body-pedia that we love!

Cooking: We are going to have some fun making Hulk Rice Krispie treats that I found from The Inspiration Edit.  It will be fun to watch the boys get their hands covered in krispies and melted marshmallows.   I can't wait!  Tip: There are two ways to make green krispie treats.  We prefer to make them from scratch and add green food coloring to the krispies and to the melted marshmallows.  If you aren't up to making them, you can buy pre-made krispie treats and use food coloring to "paint" them green.  We've used this technique for krispie treats and for rock candy lollipops and they come out great.  Just note that if you choose to paint them instead of mixing it in when making from scratch, the dye is much more concentrated and will leave the kiddos with a green smile! LOL

Hope everyone has a "SUPER" week!!
