Just Some Camp Fun - Pirate Week

Ahoy mateys, it's pirate week!

This week we will be sailing the Seven Seas in search of pearls of wisdom. Hahaha!  We have art, cooking, science and swimming on the menu.  We live in a townhouse with no real outdoor or common community space so we will be tackling some of these activities at the grandparents' home. :)  And just a reminder that both of us Just Parents work a full day everyday during summer so each week will probably have no more than one activity per day.  We wish that we could plan full days of activities to replace our day camp but let's face it - NOTHING can replace our day camp!

(I will include links to some of the supplies and books we bought.  These are not affiliate links - I do not receive any compensation for purchases made through the links, they are only provided to help.)

We have a kid going into 7th grade and a kid going into 2nd grade so we are trying to find activities that would be interesting to both of them.  We are lucky that they are pretty similar in their tastes and hobbies so it isn't as hard as some families who span larger age differences or span multiple interests and personalities.

Art: We are painting treasure chests that I found at Michael's and using some acrylic craft paint and some glue on jewels.  I have links below to all the supplies we bought for this week.

Cooking: We opted for jello cups with fruit boats.  We used a printable for the flags to glue to toothpicks and we are using both oranges and apples for the boats.  I'm sure there are some parents out there that are far more creative and will probably take this and make some intricate boats.  I'm just happy if I can get them to stand upright. Hahahaha!

I found these at The Frugal Female

Science: This week we are focusing on buoyancy and how compasses work.  We will create our own boats and compasses.  For most of our at-home science experiments we will be using some kids science books we bought on Amazon. (Links below)  These are new to us that my mom bought for us to use during the pandemic so we are all trying these out together.  If you don't want to buy the books, I'm certain that a quick google search will probably give you some experiment information for each of these topics.

Amazon
We also have the Engineering and
Physics one as well.

Treasure Hunt: We will be creating clues to take each boy around the house and actually finishing up to find the "treasure" at their grandparents' house.  The clues will have something they need to solve in order to get the next clue.  The clues will be at different levels based on the age of the kid getting the clue.  I will post the clues later this week so that y'all can do it too!

Movies:  If any of you know the Just Family, you know we love movies and have many movie nights! So of course, each week we will try to incorporate some family screen time to their already full very merry screen time summer. Hahahaha!  We will be watching The Pirates! Band of Misfits as a family movie night. (Common Sense Media) And we will be watching the Pirates of the Caribbean series with our older child. (Common Sense Media)
